Which Pompeii Ticket Is Right for You?

Pompeii offers a few ways in, and the right ticket depends on your time and budget. A standard ticket gets you through the gate to explore on your own. A skip-the-line ticket adds a fixed entry time, so you avoid the long queue at Porta Marina. A guided tour brings the ruins to life with an expert who points out the highlights and shares the stories most visitors would otherwise walk straight past.

Standard entry ticket

The standard adult ticket costs €18 in 2026 and lets you explore Pompeii at your own pace. Under-18s enter free, and EU citizens aged 18 to 24 pay only €2. It is the cheapest option, though in peak season, you may still wait in line at the gate.

Skip-the-line ticket

A skip-the-line ticket gives you a set entry time and a faster route through the gate, so you spend your time inside the ruins rather than queuing outside. It costs a little more than standard entry, and in the busy summer months that small extra is well worth it.

Guided tour

A guided tour pairs your entry with an expert who walks you through the highlights, from the Forum to the Villa of the Mysteries. You learn the stories behind the stones and find the best spots without a map. Guided tours generally start at around €45 per person.

What You'll See Inside Pompeii

Pompeii Forum

The Forum

The Forum was the beating heart of Pompeii, a long open square near the Porta Marina gate where daily life played out. People came here to trade, worship, and settle disputes, so the city's most important buildings stood close by. You can still pick out the Temple of Jupiter at the northern end, the basilica that handled legal business, and the covered market where food was sold. What makes it unforgettable is the view: from the open southern end, Mount Vesuvius rises straight ahead and frames the ruins. Because it sits near the main entrance, the Forum is the natural place to start your visit. Arrive early, when the light is soft, and the square is quiet.

Villa of the Mysteries

Villa of the Mysteries

The Villa of the Mysteries sits on the quiet edge of Pompeii, a short walk beyond the city walls. This grand country house had dozens of rooms, working wine cellars, and elegant living spaces that show how the city's wealthiest residents lived. Its fame rests on one extraordinary room, where life-size figures painted against a deep, glowing red are believed to show a young woman being initiated into the cult of Dionysus. The scene is among the best-preserved paintings from the ancient world, and the colours look remarkably fresh after almost two thousand years. Because it lies away from the busiest routes, this corner often feels calm. Save a little time and energy to reach it; it is well worth the walk.

Pompeii Amphitheater

The Amphitheatre

At the far eastern end of the site stands Pompeii's amphitheatre, built around 70 BC and recognised as the oldest surviving Roman stone arena in the world. It could hold roughly 20,000 spectators, close to the whole population of the ancient city, and people travelled in from neighbouring towns on event days. The crowds came to watch gladiator contests and wild-animal shows staged on the oval floor at the centre. In 59 AD, a violent riot broke out here between locals and visitors from nearby Nuceria, and the games were banned for ten years as punishment. Today, you can climb the worn stone tiers and look down on the arena. Save some energy for the walk; the scale is genuinely surprising.

Ways to Visit Pompeii

Explore on your own

With a standard or skip-the-line ticket, you set your own route and pace. Bring a map or download an audio guide, then linger at the houses, streets, and temples that interest you and breeze past the rest. There is no timetable and no group to keep up with. It is the cheapest way to visit, and ideal if you enjoy wandering, taking photos, and discovering the ruins for yourself.

Travellers walking through Pompeii ruins

Take a guided tour

A guided tour hands the planning to an expert who walks you through the highlights and explains what you are seeing. In about two hours, you cover the Forum, a few grand houses, and the amphitheatre, with context that a map alone cannot give. Small groups keep things personal, and your guide can answer questions and point out details you would otherwise miss. It is the quickest way to understand the city.

Join a day trip

Based in another city, or short on time? Day trips run from Naples, Rome, and Sorrento, with transport, entry, and timing arranged for you, so there is nothing to organise on the day. Many combine Pompeii with a climb up Mount Vesuvius or a drive along the Amalfi Coast, turning the ruins into one highlight of a full, easy outing. It suits travelers without a car who want everything taken care of.

Bundle Pompeii with more

Bundle Pompeii with more

If you have a full day, look at combo options that add Herculaneum, Mount Vesuvius, or the Amalfi Coast. A combined ticket or tour often costs less than booking each part separately, and it saves you from juggling several bookings on the day.

Start early

Start early

Aim to arrive near opening, around 9am. The light is better for photos, the temperature is kinder, and you will have the famous spots like the Forum largely to yourself before the tour groups and the midday heat arrive in force. ·

Wear the right shoes

Wear the right shoes

Pompeii's streets are original Roman stone, worn smooth and uneven after two thousand years. Closed, comfortable walking shoes make a big difference over a few hours, and they help you move safely across the raised crossing stones and rougher patches.

Pack for the outdoors

Pack for the outdoors

Most of Pompeii is open to the sky with very little shade. Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen in summer, and a light layer in cooler months. There is a café near the entrance, but almost nothing for sale once you are inside.

Choose Your Pompeii Entrance

Pompeii has three different entrances, you can choose your arrival gate between:

  • Porta Marina - the most popular entrance point for visitors. It's the closest to the train stop Pompeii Scavi - Villa dei Misteri. This means it's also the busiest entrance, with waiting time that can go from 30 minutes to a few hours.

  • Piazza Anfiteatro - to access immediately Pompeii's most famous sites you can access the Eastern entrance which is near the Amphitheatre, if you already booked your ticket its much less crowded than the Porta Marina entrance and is only a 15 minute walk away from the main entrance.

  • Piazza Esedra - closer to the Porta Marina entrance but mainly reserved for group tours. From this entrance you cannot get an audioguide or store your luggage but having less services available means its less crowded than the other two entrances.

We did the Pompeii and Herculaneum combo over two days. Pompeii is huge and dramatic; Herculaneum is smaller but incredibly well preserved. The combo ticket saved us money, and the train from Naples was simple.

We took the day trip from Rome, and it was stress-free. Transport, entry, and a guide were all sorted for us. Seeing Vesuvius behind the ruins was unforgettable. A long day, but a highlight of our Italy trip.
